Are you like me and kill the real plants you have in your home? It’s not like you mean to, it just happens. Every time. Who doesn’t love plants in their home? They make a space feel so welcoming, fresh and inviting.
I will even follow all the instructions given to me by the garden center and the plants I bought will still eventually shrivel up and die. Either that or my cats eat them. I will finally get them looking how I want them to look and then one of my cats will munch on them, only to throw it up later. Blah! I feel like in the past I had been trying to find ways to have beautiful green plants in my home but without getting frustrated and making my cats sick. I finally figured out what worked for me and made a rule for myself that I wanted to share with you.
Here is my Plant Strategy:
Fake plants inside and real plants outside.
It sounds so simple doesn’t it? Now, I know this rule may not work for everyone. I have friends who LOVE their real plants and take such good care of them. Those same friends inform me about the different ones I could get that I surely will not kill and go on to talk about the plants that improve the air quality in their home. To my friends who don’t kill plants: it’s not that I do not believe you, it’s because in my particular situation, even if I succeeded and not killing my plants, my cats would still eat them. So you see the pickle I am in?
Make Your Fake Plants Look Real
So, let’s face the truth here… Plants are not cheap. whether they are real or fake, you are going to pay a pretty penny for them. I know they can be an investment, and that is why if you get the fake ones, they will last forever!
Now I want to make sure to state something before I go any further: I am all about having real plants in homes. I am actually envious of those who have them and make it look so easy and do not have any pets or children to mess with them.
So let me tell you how I succeeded at having plants in my home that not only look real, but fool people into touching them to see if it’s a real plant, only to be surprised that it is, in fact, a fake (but perfect looking) plant. And guys, here is the best part… I do not have to water them and they ALWAYS look perfect. I feel like I am cheating.
Plants on a Budget
Do you have a Dollar Store near you? Chances are they will have small bags of soil you can buy for only $1! Buy a few of those and then search or ask someone where they keep their rocks. They have real looking rocks and white rocks that you can buy for…. you guessed it! Only $1! Now you have to sometimes do some searching, but especially right now because it’s spring, you will see that they have a ton of fake flowers and plants. Some of them look fake and are not something I would choose, but sometimes you can find some gems hiding amongst the ugly ducklings. I have found fake succulents and real pretty plants that are life like there. I just snatch them up when I can because sometimes the same ones won’t be there when you go back!
You Can Put Plants in Anything, Not Just Pots!
Now, you will need something to put it in. They have pots and stuff at the dollar store but they aren’t great, unless you want to get the tiny pots they have there that are super cute for terrariums. Go to thrift stores or rummage sales and start collecting pots and containers you want to put plants in. Target sometimes has some cute containers in their dollar section! Remember, it doesn’t have to be necessarily a planting pot, it could be any type of container you want to put a plant in. Its could be in ball jars, tea cups or wood containers. Now this is when the real fun begins. You get to put it all together and make it your own! Take all your goodies home and have fun with it! if you are having trouble figuring out what you like and how to put it together, I would encourage you to look at Pinterest for inspiration. Or go to a cute boutique store and copy a plant display you like there, but do it in your own way.
Quick Tip: Use newspaper or grocery bags to fill the bottom of your pots so you do not waste your soil and rocks!
Now you can make SEVERAL plant arrangements for a fraction of the cost you would put towards having someone else doing the work for you.
I hope sharing my plant strategy inspires you to start making your own arrangements. Don’t shed another tear over your dead plants! How did yours turn out? Share your pics with me!
Happy Planting!
